Sr. High Summer Youth Trip - Earth Traces
June
20-25, 2005
“The
life of the Christian is like breathing in and out: In for strength
and training, and out for ministry and service.”
This
summer the Sr. High experience a week of adventure with Earth Traces.
We went on a week long journey called “5 Days of Purpose. It is
based off the “Purpose Driven Life” book.
Each
day was filled with challenges that built unity and leadership into
our group.
Here
is an overview of our week:

Day
1: Rappelling – Basically…We turned backwards and stepped of
cliffs. Does it sound scary? You’re right, it is! We rappelled down
two different cliffs. The first one was hard because no one ever
did it before. After we got the hang of it, they moved us to the
second cliff. This one dropped straight down and concaved in about
half way down so you would have to free fall the last 30-40 feet.
What
did it teach us? We need to put our faith in more than just ourselves.
Taking that first step is hard, but God has so much in store for
us if we just take that first leap of faith.

Day
2: Rock Climbing – The concept is easy. Find a rock and climb
it. But these rocks were a little different. To be safe we needed
ropes, helmet, harnesses (that looked like diapers), and special
shoes. We also needed to tie into a “belayer”. A belayer is a
person on the other end of the rope who literally holds your life
in their hands.
What
did it teach us? It taught us basic skills to tackle any obstacle.
It reminded us that both on the rock and in life, success may
not always be along the easiest path.

Day 3: Team Games – This day was filled with team work games,
puzzles, and challenges. A good part of the day our eyes were
closed and we were being led around by someone else in our group.
What
did it teach us? It taught us trust, cooperation, taking time
to listen to each other. It created more unity in our group.

Day 4: Habitat for Humanity – At first we all thought we would
be working on houses. WE WERE ALL WRONG! They dropped us off in
an empty field with four empty lots. No houses, just four empty
lots. Our job was to dig fence post holes.
Now
let me remind you it was 95 degrees by 10:00 a.m. We arrived on
site at 8:00 a.m. It was hot, humid, and we had no shade. But
we dug. And around 11:00 a.m. we finished. And we were glad we
were done.

Day 5: Caving – It was dark. It was wet. It was amazing. The
only source of light was attached to our foreheads.
Descending
into this cave reminds me of the scripture, “I must decrease so
He may increase”. It taught us that god is more pleased by how
many you serve instead of how many serve you.
